Synopsis
This first of two items (Part 2 is at HC5) explains the Church Health Review as a means of assessing a church’s general state of health.
The Review sets out to enable a thorough investigation to be made and is therefore more detailed than most other tools that are available. Instead of picking on a number of ‘marks’ of good health, it investigates every area of church life through the choice of five themes:
- Godward
- Usward
- Outward
- Leadership
- Support.
Each theme has nine questions to ask, and each question has five sample tests.
Part 1 explains the basis for the Review and lists the sources that have contributed to its development. It shows the structure, then explains the choice of five themes, the choice of the 45 questions, the purpose of the tests, and the ways in which the Review may be used.
The actual questions and tests are all listed in Part 2 (HC5) but Part 1 is essential reading for an understanding of how the Review works.

Author's notes
The Review underwent a major revision at September 2014 to recast all the questions into 'open' format, to make the explanation more user-friendly and to add other material. If you use the Review I would be glad to hear about this, and I welcome ideas for improvements. The material has been updated with minor adjustments in August 2024.
