NEW: ‘Going deeper into meetings’

This two-part article moves beyond the basics of meetings, such as agendas, minutes and seating arrangements, to think about some new ways of creating effective business gatherings in churches.

Part 1, as Article A40, looks at three planning issues that may be new to many.

  • Plan the year
  • Think three tenses
  • Welcome review.

Part 2, as Article A41, follows on to cover three people issues.

  • Keep it small
  • Watch the context
  • Play like a team.

Both parts stand on their own but, put together, they offer six creative ways of rethinking meetings of your Church Council, Kirk Session, Diaconate, Trustees, Finance Team or whatever.

Going deeper into meetings Parts 1 & 2 are now available at A40 and A41 on the Articles page of the website. As with all items on the page they may be downloaded or printed out without charge (for up to 30 copies). Ensure your church leaders responsible for planning meetings read these.

UK Church Administrator Network appoints staff

I set up the UK Church Administrator Network (UCAN) in 2009, modelling it on something similar that we used to run in Administry in the 1980s and 1990s. Since then it has grown to a membership of well over 1,300 and has now become too big for me to co-ordinate as an add-on to my main work as a church consultant and trainer.

For the past three years I and others have been carefully planning how to hand this thriving work over to a new leadership. Earlier this year a new company was formed with six Directors, all current or former operations staff in churches, and the idea is for me to pass UCAN over to them in September. A new UCAN website is ready to go live this summer.

To make this possible they are now advertising for a part-time Administrator and Network Co-ordinator to handle the day-to-day work of managing this growing ministry. They will also be using the latest technology to make this work so much more professionally than I have ever been able to manage!

You can find the details on the Administrators page of this website. Please would you make it known in your church. Closing date is 6th July. This is a key appointment to run and develop this vital network which brings so much encouragement and resource to people working for a local church in administration and operations. It would suit a gifted administrator, experienced in working for a church, able to take considerable levels of responsibility, working from home.

By Christmas I hope to be focusing all my energies once again on consultancy, training and writing, knowing that UCAN is now in excellent new hands.
